Washington's 48 kills confirmed to be state record
The Colorado High School Activities Association on Wednesday confirmed that Haleigh Washington's 48-kill performance Aug. 31 against Grandview marked the most ever in a sanctioned volleyball event.
Casey Bauer of Montezuma-Cortez held the previous record of 43, set in 2001.
Washington, the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year for Colorado, has helped Doherty to a 2-0 start and a 31-match winning streak dating back to the 2012 season.
Cheyenne Mountain leads team race in PPAC boys' golf
Through two tournaments in the Pikes Peak Athletic Conference boys' golf season, Cheyenne Mountain already opened up a sizable lead in the chase for the team title.
The Indians, with a cumulative 443 through two events at King's Deer Golf Club and Colorado Springs Country Club, own a 31-shot lead over Discovery Canyon heading into Thursday's third PPAC tournament, the Scorpion Invitational, at Springs Ranch Golf Club.
Air Academy is third with 476.
Cheyenne Mountain golfers top the individual leaderboard. Junior Wilson Belk (68-75) leads the chase for overall medalist at 143, while seniors Turner Estes (150), and Cole Anderson and Pat Shinn (151) are close behind.
Discovery Canyon's Owen Pasvogel rounds out the top five at 153.
The Kadet Invitational at Eisenhower Golf Course on Sept. 11 is the league's next tournament, followed by the league tournament Sept. 18 at The Club at Flying Horse.
Liberty gets late start to find new baseball coach
Typically, athletic directors fill coaching and/or teaching openings during the summer.
But when Liberty baseball coach Scott Cooper suddenly resigned at the end of July after two seasons, athletic director Mike Sibley took a deep breath, waited until school to start, then started to search for the next Lancers' coach.
"I'd love to have a coach in the building with a teaching job, but by that time, I was fully staffed," Sibley said. "We're in the midst of looking for a new coach."
In the meantime, assistant coach David Schmidt is serving as interim coach.
In Cooper's first season in 2012, the Lancers advanced to the region final but fell to eventual 5A state runner-up Regis Jesuit. Last season, Liberty slipped to 7-12.
