5A SECOND ROUND

DOHERTY (8-2) at THUNDERRIDGE (9-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Shea Stadium, Highlands Ranch

Quick facts: How's this for contrasting pasts? In the time it took Doherty to win one playoff game (2006), ThunderRidge played in 16 postseason contests, winning nine. Led by senior Zach Young (2,309 yards, 38 TDs) Doherty averages 41.6 points but will face a Grizzles defense allowing an average of only 15.3.

4A FIRST ROUND

PUEBLO WEST (7-3) at PINE CREEK (9-1)

7 p.m. Friday, District 20 Stadium

Quick facts: After a one-year hiatus, Pine Creek returns to the playoffs for its first postseason appearance since the 2011 state championship game. Pueblo West fell to Monarch in last season's state semifinals. These teams met six times in nonleague action between 2006-11, with Pine Creek going 5-1. The Eagle have won seven straight.

DAKOTA RIDGE (7-3) at FALCON (9-1)

1 p.m. Saturday, Falcon High School

Quick facts: After dropping first-round games on the road the past two seasons, the Falcons will host for the first time since 2010. The Eagles' record is deceiving. They lost nonleague tilts to 5A ThunderRidge and Chatfield, which are 17-3 combined, before dropping its lone league game to Denver South (8-2).

3A FIRST ROUND

CONIFER (8-2) at THE CLASSICAL ACADEMY (8-2)

7 p.m. Friday, TCA North Campus

Quick facts: No. 10 Conifer is a pair of one-point losses from a perfect regular season. Instead, the Lobos, a 3A state semifinalist a season ago, hit the road to play a seventh-seeded Titans team that hopes to undo the bad feeling of last season's first-round home shutout loss to Delta. TCA has lost only to Coronado and Discovery Canyon, both of whom are 9-1.

RIFLE (8-2) at CORONADO (9-1)

1 p.m. Saturday, Garry Berry Stadium

Quick facts: The No. 6 Cougars, after a 22-year wait, broke through to a 9-1 regular season and will hope to rebound off last week's loss at Discovery Canyon. Coronado will be without leading RB Isaiah Duvall (996 yards, 10 TDs), who is sitting out a one-game suspension after his ejection last week following two personal-foul penalties.

PUEBLO EAST (6-4) at DISCOVERY CANYON (9-1)

1 p.m. Saturday, District 20 Stadium

Quick facts: Discovery Canyon, the top seed in 3A, hosts the same Eagles team it beat 49-28 on Aug. 30. Like their rivals at TCA, the Thunder also hope to erase the sting of an opening-round loss at home. A year ago, Discovery Canyon earned a No. 2 seed but fell to Pueblo Central.

2A QUARTERFINALS

KENT DENVER (8-2) at MANITOU SPRINGS (10-0)

1 p.m. Saturday, Richardson Field (Manitou Springs High School)

Quick facts: This is your typical "strength-vs.-power" matchup: Kent, the reigning 2A state champs, averages 32 points per game, while Manitou's defense has held eight of its opponents to single digits. Kent is led by junior RB Jaden Franklin, who has 17 TDs and averages 8.7 yards per carry.

FLORENCE (8-2) at BRUSH (9-0)

1 p.m. Saturday, Brush High School

Quick facts: Florence is riding a five-game winning streak into this quarterfinal-round matchup. That's a little better than half of the run put together by the Beetdiggers, the No. 1 seed in 2A who haven't scored fewer than 41 points during the past six weeks. For the season, Brush is averaging nearly 40 points per game.
