LONGMONT — Law enforcement agencies across Colorado have begun a summer-long program of heightened DUI enforcement.

Darrell Lingk with the Colorado Department of Transportation is reminding drivers that a DUI could cost more than $10,000 to take care of. Last year, state and local law enforcement agencies made 423 DUI arrests during Memorial Day weekend.

The Longmont Times-Call reports (http://bit.ly/1nICDFm ) there were 188 alcohol-related traffic fatalities last year, with 36 percent of them occurring between the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

Col. Scott Hernandez, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, says "motorists need to face the fact that if they drive impaired, we will catch them."
