Gonzalez goes on DL with inflamed index finger

DENVER — The Colorado Rockies have placed All-Star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed left index finger that's bothered him most of the season.

Gonzalez's finger has recently become so swollen that he struggles to hold onto the bat. He's hitting just .255 this season.

To take Gonzalez's place on the roster, the Rockies recalled infielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Wednesday. They also recalled catcher Michael McKenry from Colorado Springs and designated catcher Jordan Pacheco for assignment.

The break will give Gonzalez a chance to rest not only his ailing finger, but a balky left knee that's given him trouble at times.

The 28-year-old Gonzalez played in just 19 games after the All-Star break last season because of a sprained right middle finger.
