At Fossil Ridge: Doherty sent shockwaves through the state, defeating the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A girls' soccer tournament behind Alex Lanning's goal and freshman Riley Furbush's shutout in net.
Previously undefeated Fossil Ridge (14-1-2) made a furious attempt to tie the game late, peppering the net, but Furbush stood tall to help the Spartans earn the upset.
Lanning scored just moments into the second half off an assist from Marisa Paukovich, and then Doherty did what it needed to in order to hold on for the upset win.
"This is the biggest win in school history for us," Doherty coach Eryn Gallagher said. "Riley made two huge saves back-to-back; she was just fantastic. I don't worry about her at all because she's a true competitor and is built for this and thrives in games like this."
No. 17 Doherty (9-7) will travel to No. 8 Columbine (14-3) in the state quarterfinals Tuesday.
"This is very exciting for these girls," Gallagher said. "We had some big wins last year, but nothing like this. Nobody believed in us except us, our fans and our parents, and we love it when people doubt us."
