The Gazette took home 65 awards from two statewide journalism contests Friday night, including a Best of Show award from the Colorado Press Association and 13 awards for its three-day "Other Than Honorable" series by Dave Philipps that examined how soldiers injured during war were being discharged with no benefits.
The series, which ran May 19-21, won top public service and investigative reporting awards in the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest. It also won top public service, online video interview, investigative story, series and website-multimedia awards from the annual Colorado Press Association contest.
The series' photographer, Michael Ciaglo, won a second-place award for best photo essay from the Colorado Press Association.
Awards for both contests were presented Friday during the annual Colorado Press Association convention.
The Gazette also took 14 other first-place awards. Honorees were Ryan Maye Handy, Christian Murdock, Mark Reis, Paul Klee, Jerilee Bennett, Barbara Cotter, Rich Laden, Monica Mendoza and Ciaglo.
The entire Gazette staff won first-place awards from the Colorado Press Association for work covering the Black Forest fire and a special section on the first anniversary of the Waldo Canyon fire, as well as a second-place general excellence award in the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest.
The Gazette won 22 second- and third-place awards in the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest, including second-place awards to Carol Lawrence, Ciaglo, Reis, Bennett, Junfu Han, Handy, Allison Noon, Linda Navarro, Jakob Rodgers and the entire newsroom staff, and third-place awards to Debbie Kelley, Reis, McGraw, Ciaglo, Bill Vogrin, Lawrence, Bennett, Han, David Ramsey, Brent Briggeman and the entire newsroom staff.
The Gazette also won 22 second- and third-place awards in the Colorado Press Association contest, including second-place awards to Cotter, McGraw, Bob Stephens, Megan Schrader, Murdock, Ramsey, Rodgers, Nichole Montanez, Tom Roeder and Erin Prater, John Schroyer, Handy, Reis, Wayne Heilman and the design and layout staff.
Third-place awards went to Vogrin, Daniel Chacon, Rodgers, Garrison Wells, Kelley, Ciaglo, Schrader, Handy and Klee.
