The Gazette collected 51 awards for its journalism over the weekend, including the Associated Press' sweepstakes award for general excellence, the top award for newspapers with the largest circulation in Colorado.

The Gazette brought home 30 awards from the Associated Press and 21 from the Colorado Press Association, the two main statewide contests for newspapers, whose winners are named during the Colorado Press Association's annual conference, held this year in Colorado Springs.

Photo editor Christian Murdock brought home nine awards - seven from AP and two from the CPA, including first-place awards for general news photo, portrait/personality photo, Sports photo, and photography portfolio. Photographer Dougal Brownlie won five awards, including first-place awards for feature photography, photo illustration and portfolio.

The Gazette's digital staff, led by digital editor Jerry Herman, won awards from the AP for best website in the state and best online special package for the Gazette's "Southeast" series. They also won awards from the CPA for online breaking news, multimedia, and breaking news video.

Gazette reporters Stephanie Earls and Tom Roeder won first-place awards for investigative story package for their piece about a local Marine's suicide, "Ideal Marine." Earls also won first-place awards from the CPA for news story for her article "Fatal Addiction," which also won Earls a first place from the AP for feature story.

Gazette court reporter Lance Benzel won a first-place award from the AP for spot news story for his reporting on the slayings of two Coronado High School students.

Designer Derek Kuhn won three first-place awards from the CPA, for feature page design, cover design, and informational graphic, and won another first-place award from AP for informational graphic.

Gazette columnists also fared well in the CPA awards, taking home first-place awards for Jennifer Mulson for best humorous column writing, and first place for Woody Paige for best serious column writing. In the AP awards, Paul Klee won first place for best sports column.
