For many, the southeast side of Colorado Springs has been left to languish while the rest of the city seems to prosper. However, there are those who are willing to work to change that trend.

City, school and police representatives will participate in a panel Wednesday evening aimed at discussing possible improvements for the southeast. The panel will be hosted by The Gazette, which published a five-day series last month focusing on some of the prominent issues the southeast faces.

The discussion, hosted by The Gazette's Eric Singer, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Tutt Boys & Girls Club at 1455 South Chelton Road.

The four panelists participating will be Yolanda Avila, Jeannie Orozco, Jariah Walker and Scott Whittington. Avila is a city councilwoman who represents the southeast side. Orozco is a newly elected board member for Harrison School District 2. Walker is the executive director of the city's Urban Renewal Authority. And Whittington is a commander at the Colorado Springs Police Department's Sand Creek Division.

The panel is free to attend and open to the public. Those unable to attend can stream the meeting on the Gazette's Facebook page. The five-day series on the southeast side can be read at gazette.com/southeast.
