A broken gas line prompted the closure of Black Forest Road Wednesday shortly after 12 p.m. at Swan Road.
Crews are working to fix the leak.
That portion of Black Forest Road has been rife with construction and a third-party contractor may have struck the two-inch high pressure gas line running along the road, Black Hills Energy senior program manager Wes Ashton said.
"This could potentially affect 50 to 70 customers downstream whose homes are hooked up to the gas line, but we've had a crew working on it as fast as they possibly can," Ashton said.
The gas break did not prompt evacuations because the energy company knew where the leak was and residences were not close enough to pose a safety hazard, Ashton said.
Black Forest Road will remain closed until the gas line is fixed.
