Flying with the National Guard

In a wind-buffeted helicopter above this vast, vertical snowscape, full-grown elk can be difficult to spot. Now try locating the footprints of two Colorado Springs teenagers. Sgt. John Cerda says it was like something in an old Family Circus cartoon. The tracks made no sense and went in circles. Cerda is the National Guardsman who spotted the footprints while flying as crew chief aboard a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the High Altitude Aviation Training Site west of Vail.
The full story, from The Gazette senior military editor Tom Roeder, will be available Saturday.
