Three baby flammulated owls sit on the leg of Colorado College Flammulated Owl Project researcher Ross Calhoun as he prepares to weigh them in the Manitou Experimental Forest Sunday, July 7, 2013. Project leader and CC professor Brian Linkhart has been working with the flammulated owl for the past 33 years in an attempt to better understand the threatened species.

When someone asks you if you want to go hang out with baby animals, you don't say no. Whether it's your friends new puppy or your brothers owl research subjects, you go. I never knew I would have so much fun tramping around the forest watching people climbing up ladders and setting up nets, but the whole experience was amazing. And the big eyed wonder in these owlets summarizes this experience for me. Michael Ciaglo, The Gazette
