Fremont County schools were placed on lockout status Friday as a precaution after the Federal Correctional Complex in Florence received an "anonymous threat to facilitate an escape of several inmates."

Authorities have since deemed the threat as non-credible.

A press release issued by the Federal Bureau of Prisons said at about 7:15 a.m., the Federal Correctional Complex received an "anonymous phone call threatening to facilitate an escape of several inmates."

"We do not believe the threat is credible, but we did increase security measures at the facility to alleviate any possible concern from the community," the release stated.

Florence Police Chief Mike DeLaurentis and Florence-Penrose School Superintendent Rhonda Vendetti said there was never a direct threat to any of the Florence-Penrose schools.

Schools in Penrose and Cañon City were also affected by the lockout, which was lifted at about 1:20 p.m. in Cañon City.
