Three puppies and an older dog died in an apartment fire Saturday afternoon in the southwest part of the city.

One apartment at the Cheyenne Crest Apartment Complex in the 4000 block of Westmeadow Drive was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived about 2:45 p.m., said Colorado Springs Fire Department Lt. Jeff Sievers.

"First units that got here saw a pretty good plume going up," Sievers said. Shortly after, firefighters had the blaze under control.

The dogs were in the apartment that burned; four or five other apartments were damaged, Sievers said. No residents were injured in the fire.

The cause is under investigation.
