A 25-year-old woman facing felony child abuse charges was a nearly 8-year soldier stationed at Fort Carson.

Kanesha Godin was a sergeant automated logistical specialist in the 10th Special Forces Group, according to information provided by Fort Carson officials.

Godin, from Pikeville, NC, was accused Tuesday of locking her two young children in a bedroom for a few days while she was away on a trip.

Fountain police said they went to Godin's home in the 100 block of Wellington Street on March 8 after an unidentified friend, who had been asked to stop by once a day to feed the children and change their diapers, realized no one else was taking care of them.

The friend had reportedly been told that a neighbor was providing child care throughout the day and night, but "upon seeing their malnourished condition," the friend called police, according to police.

It is unknown how old the children are or how long the mother was away.

Godin turned herself in to police and was arrested on suspicion of two counts of felony child abuse after a warrant was issued Tuesday. She remains in the El Paso County jail on $25,000 bond and an active duty Fort Carson hold, inmate records show.

Godin is a decorated soldier, with medals in army commendation, achievement, good conduct, national defense service, humanitarian service and army service ribbon. She also received an Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star and had a parachute badge, Fort Carson said.

Fort Carson officials said they're cooperating with Fountain police on the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police Department at 382-8555. To remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 634-STOP (7867).
