Fountain Valley School junior Will Edelson won first place at the Colorado Poetry Out Loud on Monday, becoming the school's second student in two years to win the state competition.

Edelson, of Colorado Springs, is headed to the national poetry competition in Washington, D.C. in May to compete for scholarships worth up to $20,000, the school said in a news release.

In 2016, Fountain Valley School student David Cendon Garcia won the state competition.

At FVS, Edelson immerses himself in performance arts. He recently completed a run as the lead character, Tevye, in the school's "Fiddler on the Roof" production and recited one of his poems at the Love Poetry in the Shadow of Pikes event with the Colorado State Poet Laureate at Library 21C.

"Poetry is an important aspect of the FVS curriculum," Laura Fawcett, a school spokeswoman, said in a statement.
