Former Coors Classic cycling champion critically injured in Boulder bike accident

Dale Stetina, a champion cyclist and a member of the Bicycle Hall of Fame, was critically injured in bike accident in Lefthand Canyon on Saturday.

The Colorado State Patrol Sunday identified Stetina as the accident victim. Rich Sheehan, a spokesman for Boulder Community Hospital, said Stetina, 57 is in critical condition.

Stetina is a two-time winner of Colorado's Coors Classic and father of Boulder pro-cyclist Peter Stetina, 26, according to the web site 303cycling.com.

A 1999 Jeep sports utility vehicle was headed west on Lefthand Canyon Drive when the driver - identified only as an adult male - pulled across the center line and onto a shoulder on the opposite side of the road, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The driver attempted to pull back into the westbound lane just as a group of cyclists headed east on the road came around a slight bend.
