Former Congressman Bob Beauprez filed paperwork Monday with the Secretary of State for his candidacy for Governor.

The Republican frequently told the media he would not announce his candidacy – if he decided to run – until after he had finished a proposal that the Republican National Convention come to Colorado in 2016. Beauprez was on a team that presented Denver’s application on Monday in Washington D.C.

A formal announcement is expected when he gets back from the trip.

But Beauprez likely wanted to file the paperwork before the Republican precinct caucuses kick off Tuesday. Across the state tomorrow Republican voters will gather and elect delegates to go to County Assembly meetings and eventually send delegates to the state-wide convention where candidates will be chosen for the June 24 primary.

Beauprez is the seventh Republican candidate to enter the race, hoping for shot at unseating Democratic incumbent Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Already in the race are Sen. Greg Brophy, a farmer from Wray; Secretary of State Scott Gessler; Steve House, a businessman from Brighton; and former Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp; former Congressman Tom Tancredo and rancher Roni Bell Sylvester.

All but two of those candidates – Tancredo and Sylvester – participated in a debate Sunday co-hosted by The Gazette.Read more here

Beauprez is starting late, but his state-wide name recognition puts him in the same category as Gessler and Tancredo.

Beauprez ran for governor in 2008 against Bill Ritter and lost.

His website simply says “Coming Soon” with (C) Bob Beapurez 2014.
