Former Bally fitness center in Colorado Springs has another new operator

Another fitness center is making a run at operating out of the former Bally Total Fitness Club on North Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs.

Tru Fit Athletic Clubs, whose website lists six Denver-area locations and another half-dozen in Texas, opened last month in the old Bally's site at 5620 N. Academy.

The location has been a revolving door of sorts for fitness centers. After Bally's closed in mid-2014, Vortex Fitness took over the building. Vortex, however, closed in spring 2015, according to Gazette news partner KKTV. In January, Springs Health & Fitness opened at the site, but shuttered after only a few months.

Springs general manager Nicole Ficco said Tru Fit's multi-state ownership group, which includes longtime fitness industry members, has experience taking over other fitness clubs and converting them to the Tru Fit brand.

"They definitely wanted to get into the Springs market," Ficco said. "Not just because the Springs is one of the fittest cities in the U.S., but it is a great opportunity to definitely expand and spread our Tru Fit name."

Tru Fit offers equipment by Precor, Keiser and Life Fitness, and recently added about $200,000 worth of equipment; its amenities include an Olympic-sized pool, a whirlpool spa and yoga, Pilates and Body Pump classes.

Tru Fit enters a crowded market of fitness centers and athletic clubs; recognizable names in the Springs include Life Time Fitness, VillaSport, 24 Hour Fitness, Gold's Gym, Planet Fitness and Orangetheory.

Ficco said Tru Fit isn't necessarily trying to compete head to head with others, but wants to provide options and alternatives to its members.

A member and guest appreciation is planned June 30, with a grand opening in September.
