The flash flood warning for the Black Forest burn scar was canceled at 5:25 p.m. Sunday by the National Weather Service, two hours ahead of schedule.

Meteorologist Patrick Cioffi said water levels and conditions had eased in the area and a warning no longer was needed.

"Flood waters have receeded, so the criteria for a flash flood warning is no longer being met," Cioffi said. "We are expecting thunderstorms to continue traveling over the region for the remainder of the evening, so if we have to re-issue a warning, we will."

Earlier, the weather service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 5 p.m. and initially a flash flood warning until 7:30 p.m.

Despite the lowered alert, heavy rains over Black Forest washed out a portion of Casey Lane, off Shoup Road. El Paso County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Joe Roybal said deputies helped stop thru traffic and contain the area, while the Department of Transportation worked to assess the damage and begin repair work when the rains passed.

According to the weather service, slow-moving thunderstorms were located near Falcon, traveling southeast at 10 mph, where up to 1.5 inches fell by 4 p.m.

Quarter-sized hail was reported in the area, the weather service said.

The hardest-impacted locations included Colorado Springs, Falcon, Peterson Air Force Base and Schriever Air Force Base, the weather service said.
