The Broadmoor Garden Club, founded in 1935, put its focus for 2013 on conservation in a breathtaking way: Colorado outdoors photographer/author John Fielder, who shared his awe-inspiring photo art, his experiences and his photography tips.

Together with Lise Aangeenbrug, executive director of Great Outdoors Colorado, Fielder showed an audience of 200 on April 12 the work GOCO has done over two decades in a program titled 'Great Outdoors Colorado: Celebrating 20 Years of Protecting Our Magnificent Natural Heritage. '

Fielder's was a labor of love as he traversed 35,000 miles across Colorado to document GOCO's grants involving canyons and rivers, parks and ranches, and wilderness areas. 'We've given every Coloradan something to enjoy close to home, ' Aangeenbrug said. 'No state tax money, no state money, it's funded 50 percent by Colorado Lottery proceeds. '

Putting on his environmentalist cap, Fielder encouraged the audience to contact holdout Congressman Doug Lamborn to support legislation to protect new wilderness areas and he noted that El Paso County has not created an open space tax. A major area of concern, he said, is water and mineral rights, which are being sold off to highest bidders, leading to empty creeks and streams. 'Why are we building all these parks and trails if there is no water available? ' he asked.

Coming up in July is Fielder's latest book, '100 Years of Denver Mountain Parks. ' His other works were available for signing at the event.

Among the Garden Club members working on the event were club president Suzanne DuBois, Judy Sellers, Sarah Young, Susie Ramsay, Suzy Connaughton, Pam Thatcher, Sherry Coutts, Susan Wallnutt, Cherryl Kilgore and Joan Schulz.
