LAS VEGAS - A late rally fell short as the 11th-sseded Air Force women's basketball team fell to sixth-seed San Diego State 63-56 in the opening round of the 2014 Reese's Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship, being held at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Jimi Blagowsky (jr., Edmond, Okla.) led the Falcons with 18 points, while senior Camille Thompson (McDonough, Ga.), added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
San Diego State scored the first five points of the game, but Air Force took the lead with an 11-2 run that included three baskets from long range. The Falcons led by as many as six points in the opening half, but the Aztecs battled back, cutting the deficit to 21-20 with just under eight minutes on the clock.
While Air Force pushed its lead back to 27-22 with 5:46 remaining in the first half, the Falcons went cold over the next four minutes, allowing San Diego State to regain the lead. The Aztecs held a four-point advantage in the final two minutes of the quarter before Air Force cut the margin to 33-31 at the half.
The Aztecs continued to pull away in the second period, pushing its lead to 50-40 with 8:29 remaining. However, the Falcons went on a 10-0 run, capped off with back-to-back 3-pointers from Kelly Lujan (Fr., Reno, Nev.) and Blagowsky, as Air Force tied the game with 5:21 on the clock.
However, San Diego State (13-16) scored the next nine points to regain the lead before closing out the victory. Air Force finished at 1-28.
