Jerry Chase, 65, reportedly escaped the Skyline Correctional Center on the East Canon Prison Complex near Canon City only to be caught hours later, according to corrections officials.

The Colorado Department of Corrections released a statement Wednesday identifying Chase as having missed the 5 a.m. formal count at the minimum security facility.

Corrections' tracking teams captured Chase shortly after 3 p.m. hiding on prison property near a creek bed, Fremont County Sheriff's Office Capt. Don Pinover said.

"The department's property spans thousands of acres, but he didn't get very far," Pinover said.

Chase began serving three consecutive four-year convictions out of Grand County for harassment and stalking on July 28, 2009, department spokesman Roger Hudson said.

Chase is eligible for parole on Oct. 2 of this year and his mandatory prison release is Oct. 2019.

A Special Operations Response Team was activated and working closely with local authoritites, Hudson said.

Anyone who spots Chase should avoid contact with him and notify local law enforcement immediately.

Anyone with information can call police at 444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP.
