ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz was in New Mexico Tuesday to visit the Los Alamos and Sandia national labs.
Moniz met with employees at the lab, toured key facilities and was briefed on their intelligence and energy work.
Both laboratories are run by private contractors overseen by the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
Moniz said one of his priorities as energy secretary is creating better oversight of the contractors by the NNSA, which has come under renewed scrutiny for security lapses and massive cost overruns.
But he also emphasized the importance of their intelligence work and research into new energy sources.
