The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has lost one of its canine officers.

On Monday, the office announced the death of 7-year-old K-9 Blitz after an emergency visit to a veterinarian over the weekend found he was suffering from medical issues "that were beyond repair."

Blitz had served under Deputy Younkin since 2011, the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.

"He has served honorably during that time and will be missed not only by Deputy Younkin but all that have had the opportunity of being around him," the post said.

Two other K9s will continue the job, the office said: K-9 Axel and K-9 Nash.

The loss comes three months after the office mourned the death of retired K-9 Falco. Falco served the office for six years before retiring in 2015; he died in March.
