A group of parents failed to gather enough signatures by Monday's 5 p.m. deadline to continue the process to recall six of the seven Colorado Springs School District 11 board of education members.

The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office did not receive the 15,000 petition signatures needed for each candidate so the effort has ended, said Ryan Parsell, spokesman for the office.

'We were pretty close, ' said Mariam Kurvink, one of the recall organizers. 'We have enough supporters, but we didn't get enough help collecting signatures. It's not going to stop us or keep us down as far as who's on the board, when it comes to election time. '

If the organizers want to try again, they would need to restart the entire recall process, Parsell said.

The effort to unseat D-11 board President Janet Tanner, Vice President LuAnn Long, Treasurer Nora Brown, Secretary Elaine Naleski, and members Sandra Mann and the Rev. Al Loma started after a Feb. 6 board decision to close Wasson High School and two elementary schools and sell two other defunct schools.

Recall committee members said they didn't think the district is spending its money wisely and that D-11 board members didn't listen to parents and students.

'The money is not going to our kids' education like it's supposed to, ' Kurvink said. 'We have reports, papers and proof, and we're not done fighting. '

The committee started gathering signatures on March 8 after revising the initial submissions of petitions to the clerk and recorder's office and had 60 days to turn in the petitions.
