Drive-thru review: KFC boneless chicken is best with dark meat

KFC is blaring that Original Recipe Boneless is 'revolutionary ' - I'll just say 'bigger. ' KFC already has chicken tenders and bites, so consider this an upgrade.

You know our mantra in the drive-thru: Less is NOT more. More is more. Make everything extra-large. We can spend one more summer covering up at the beach. We'll get in shape next year.

Here's the blueprint: deep-fried boneless, skinless chicken fillets with the Colonel's Original Recipe breading.

You also can get Original Recipe Boneless dark-meat fillets, which is my pick. Chicken thighs are tons more flavorful and juicy than boring, dry, I'm-sick-of-them chicken breasts. Dark-meat Original Recipe Boneless is the same price as white-meat, but you pay the price in extra calories and fat. A dark-meat fillet has 250 calories and 14 fat grams. But it's worth the guilt.

The shift in American taste from traditional bone-in chicken to boneless is unstoppable. Last year, for the first time, sales of boneless wings topped regular wings. Some drive-thru analysts see a day when shares of boneless chicken exceed those of full-bodied chicken, even at KFC.

KFC Original Boneless is a smart product. It's delicious. Even the white-meat fillets are flavorful. Best of all, both white- and dark-meat Original Recipe Boneless pieces are made with whole breast fillets and thigh fillets.

KFC Original Boneless leaves me wanting more ... how about Extra Crispy Boneless? Spicy Extra Crispy Boneless? If Taco Bell can reinvent itself around Doritos chips, KFC has a whole new frontier with boneless.
