A fire sent dozens of residents fleeing from an apartment complex Wednesday night in north-central Colorado Springs.
Five people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation from the blaze at the Residence at Austin Bluffs, 4179 Morning Sun Ave., northwest of Academy Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway, said Colorado Springs fire Lt. John Aker. A firefighter also suffered minor injuries, he said.
Art Marroquin, who lives in the unit next to the apartment where the fire began, said he heard a loud bang about two minutes before the fire alarms went off.
He rushed into his neighbor's apartment and saw flames in a closet.
"It was way out of control," Marroquin said. "The flames were really high."
Firefighters arrived four minutes after receiving the call and reported the blaze extinguished at 11:03 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A woman living in that apartment escaped with her parakeet.
The American Red Cross is assisting people affected by the blaze, though it was not immediately known how many people would be displaced, Aker said.
