A homeowner's dog was shot when a man broke into a downtown residence Thursday and demanded money.

The dog was taken to an animal emergency clinic, Colorado Springs police said. Its condition was not known Friday.

The homeowner was not harmed.

The resident said he was at his home in the 700 block of East Vermijo Avenue about 8:31 p.m. when a stranger walked in, pulled out a silver automatic handgun and demanded money. When confronted by the owner's two dogs, the burglar shot one of them before being handed money and running away, police said.

The culprit was not found.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call police at 719-444-7000 or leave an anonymous tip with Pikes Peak Crime Stoppers at 719-634-7867.
