DNA solves Colorado Springs sex assault case from 1996

By Garrison Wells Published: May 31, 2013

DNA analysis has led Colorado Springs investigators to a suspect in a 16-year old sexual assault case.

Armando Lee Trujillo, 32, has been charged with sexual assault, according to a press release from the Colorado Springs Police Department Friday.

He is being held at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex on other charges.

The case was assigned in December, 2012, to the Colorado Springs Special Victims Section/Adult Sexually Assault Unit.

On Oct. 29, 1996, a 16-year-old girl was found naked and unconscious in an alley near the 1700 block of West Vermijo Avenue, police said.

The incident had been reported by neighbors who told investigators they heard screaming from the area. Two males - one carrying a long, flexible stick or whip - were spotted by a witness who thought the victim had been beaten.

In April of 2012, investigators were notified by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations that the DNA matched a profile in the Colorado Offender and Colorado Arrestee indexes.
