BOULDER — Authorities say a "distraught" member of the military who forced the evacuation of an open space park in Boulder was distraught but not threatening anyone else.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office says someone reported a possibly suicidal man with a rifle on a trail at Chautauqua Park Thursday evening. Sgt. Brian Zierlein says deputies were able to contact the 19-year-old by cell phone and convinced him to surrender the weapon.

Authorities didn't release the man's name or disclose which branch of the military he serves in.

Zierlein told Daily Camera ( ) that deputies did their best to try to get others out of the park.

The man was taken to hospital. The sheriff's office says he will be charged with a city parks violation for having a firearm on the trail.
