Fort Carson has started its recovery process after a Sunday grass fire consumed about 270 acres, says a Monday news release.
The fire was still smoldering Monday near Gate 5, east of Colorado 115. No injuries were reported and no structures affected, said Fort Carson spokeswoman Brandy Gill.
Ongoing air and ground efforts were to continue into Monday evening as helicopter crews use water buckets to soak the area, according to the release.
During that time, Gate 5 and Titus Boulevard were to be closed to everyone but Navajo Village residents and emergency vehicles taking patients to Evans Army Community Hospital. All other traffic was being rerouted to Gate 1.
The 400 or so soldiers and family members who were evacuated Sunday were allowed to return to their homes Sunday night, Gill said.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
