DENVER — Denver Mayor Michael Hancock wants to update city ordinances to ban free joint handouts in city parks.

Hancock tells Colorado Public Radio (www.cpr.org/?) that he and City Councilman Chris Nevitt will introduce an ordinance on Monday that would better define the city's ban on public consumption of marijuana.

The ordinance would emphasize that all Denver city parks are drug-free zones.

Public consumption already is outlawed under Colorado's law legalizing recreational marijuana.

Hancock tells CPR anyone consuming in parks would be cited and possibly arrested. Spokeswoman Amber Miller says the city's 4/20 rally is not affected by this proposed ordinance.

Tens of thousands of people have attended the annual marijuana celebrations at Civic Center Park. Last April's rally was marred by gunfire that injured two people and scattered the crowd.
