Dawson Carper stands tall in Rampart history, signs with Hawaii

Dawson Carper is standing tall. Well at 6-foot-11 he always is but this time he's standing tall in Rampart history as one of possibly just two Rampart students to attend a Division 1 school for men's basketball.

Carper signed with Hawaii on Wednesday at Rampart. The feat left athletic director Andy Parks and basketball coach J'on St. Clair scratching their heads as to whether Carper is the first Rampart player to be part of a Division I basketball program. A player went to Northern Colorado before but the two aren't sure the Bears had a Division I program then.

Carper said he's been playing basketball since he was 3 and 4 years old and credits his mom for getting him involved with the sport. She played basketball in college as well.

Being one of the first, if not the first, players from a school to attend a Division I school is a big deal and Carper cited his family, teammates and coaches for getting him to this point.

"(I'm) very excited and honored, my coaching staff has helped me get here," he said. "I have great teammates so I'm very thankful for this opportunity. It's a big deal and I'm excited."
