ASPEN — A cyclist who collapsed and died near the summit of Independence Pass on Saturday was a longtime Aspen resident and experienced rider.

An emergency room nurse and an EMT passing by on their way to a wilderness expedition stopped to help 51-year-old Steve Menscher on Saturday afternoon but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friend Jonathan Birnkrant was riding with Menscher and another less-experienced rider. He told the Aspen Daily News (http://bit.ly/1ntZckM ) that they were riding at a slower pace than usual.

Family and friends believe he had a heart attack but the coroner has not released a cause of death yet.
