Gazette Premium Content CU-Boulder turns to crowdfunding to raise money

Associated Press Updated: May 2, 2014 at 12:09 pm

BOULDER — A documentary that filmmakers hope will encourage support for LGBTQ students, a business and engineering student partnership exploring how to turn clean technology ideas into market-ready products and plans for an online Colorado history archive are among eight University of Colorado projects seeking resources through crowdfunding.

The university's Boulder campus launched the crowdfunding campaigns Friday. In a statement, Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano says crowdfunding is not for university operations, but designed to connect and engage audiences with teams looking for supporters and cash. The campaign will allow supporters to follow the progress of projects and make tax-deductible contributions online.

CU says its pilot campaigns will last 30 to 45 days, and that it hopes to expand crowdfunding once the initial campaigns end.
