A Colorado State University student from Colorado Springs remains hospitalized in critical condition at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland after he was hit on his bike in Fort Collins by a female driver who fled the scene Wednesday night.

Police are appealing for the public’s help in finding the woman accused of hitting Michael Patterson, 21, of Colorado Springs, as he rode near campus.

Patterson was riding north on Shields Street near Laurel Street when he cut across two lanes of traffic, apparently to make a left turn onto Birch Street. A woman in a white four-door sedan struck Patterson as he crossed in front of her, knocking him to the ground, police said. The woman stopped her car, got out, exchanged words with the bleeding and visibly injured cyclist, and then drove off, police said.

Had the woman stopped, police would have likely cited Patterson for cutting across traffic. But because the young woman drove off, police are treating the approximately 6 p.m. crash as a hit and run.
