Ice build up on power lines and insulators caused a city-wide power outage in Cripple Creek Thursday morning.

Black Hills Energy confirmed the city was without power and all businesses were closed since 8 a.m.

Wes Ashton, Black Hills Energy spokesman, said the company had power restored to the city by 10:10 a.m., with the exception of a handful of customers.

The energy company identified the source of the power outage as faulty insulators in a transformer near the El Paso Mine due to ice build up on the power lines.

Ashton said the power lines were in an area difficult to reach by work crews, but they were be able to restore power before assessing whether the equipment needed to be repaired or replaced.
