DENVER — A Denver couple are facing multiple counts of felony child abuse after police say their four young children were found malnourished and living in unsanitary conditions.

KUSA-TV reports (http://on9news.tv/177KSBO ) 66-year-old Wayne Sperling and 35-year-old Lorinda Bailey were charged after an emergency room doctor reported that a 2-year-old who was brought in with a cut on the head was unwashed, nonverbal and smelled of cigarette smoke. The arrest affidavit for the couple described the family's home as having an "overwhelming" smell of cat urine and feces.

Investigators say they found 1-2 inches of cat feces under the bunk bed where the children — ages 2, 4, 5 and 6 — slept. The warrant also describes the children as developmentally delayed, nonverbal and malnourished.

Sperling and Bailey are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
