A threat circulating on Snapchat was targeting a New Mexico high school, not Coronado High School in Colorado Springs, officials say.
The Snapchat photo shows a student holding a rifle with a caption “I’m going out with a bang,” referring to a school with the initials CHS.
The threat, aimed at Clovis High School in Clovis, N.M., sparked fear at schools with the same initials across the country. Multiple police departments, including the New York Police Department, reported the photo to Snapchat, tweeted police with the Corpus Christi Independent School District in Texas.
The 17-year-old student who posted the threat was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a school employee.
Though the threat did not originate in Colorado, Coronado planned to increase security Monday, Principal Darin Smith told parents by email. Any parents with questions on school security practices can call 328-3600.
