BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — Authorities in western South Dakota are searching for two women who went missing Tuesday night after their car was caught in flood waters.

KBFS-AM reports the car was found around 4 a.m. Wednesday in a ditch on Highway 85 north of Belle Fourche.

The station reports emergency personnel responded to the area to rescue four men who were standing on the roof of a pickup truck.

Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere says that as the water receded, he spotted the top of the car of the missing women. Lamphere says the car was empty after being submerged in about 14 feet of water.

Lamphere says the women are Colorado residents. He says the search has been hampered by washout conditions on several roads.

Highway 85 remains closed.
