Colorado woman sentenced in cyclist hit-and-run

Associated Press Published: July 2, 2014

FORT COLLINS — A Fort Collins woman convicted in a hit-and-run crash that killed a cyclist in January skirted a prison sentence but will still serve some jail time.

The Coloradoan reports (http://noconow.co/1o2Vk5p ) that 28-year-old Theresa Marie O'Connor pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and careless driving resulting in death Wednesday. She hit 46-year-old Ernesto Wiedenbrug near Windsor on Jan. 25 and turned herself in over a week later. He later died of his injuries.

About 40 cyclists were in the courtroom in a show of solidarity toward the cycling community.

Reading a prepared statement, O'Connor said she made a "terrible mistake." As part of the deal, she has agreed to be in a public service announcement video, which attorneys said will be released later this week.
