Colorado town offers reward in hate crime cases

Associated Press - Published: March 4, 2014

FORT MORGAN — A reward of $500 is being offered for information that will help Fort Morgan police find the people they say targeted the city's East African refugee community.

Police are investigating several cases of vandalism that damaged the refugees' vehicles as possible hate crimes.

Police said someone shot out the windows of about five cars with a BB gun early Sunday. Several vehicles in the same area were spray-painted with obscenities and racial slurs on Feb. 9.

Hate crimes can be prosecuted as federal civil rights violations with stiff penalties, but Fort Morgan police say they are handling the investigation.
