A 47-year-old Drake Middle School teacher was found dead Tuesday, the day after she was accused of having an inappropriate physical relationship with a former middle school student, authorities say.

Gretchen Krohnfeldt was pronounced dead in her home at 1 p.m. Tuesday, said Dan Pruett, chief deputy coroner for the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The cause of death is pending, but may be available Friday, Pruett said.

A school resource officer was told Monday that the teacher had an inappropriate relationship with a former Drake student who was now in high school, according to a joint news release by Arvada police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the investigation, a physical relationship occurred between the teacher and student in Arvada and it started while the student attended the middle school. Police and sheriff’s deputies continue to investigate.
