A man killed early Thursday at a southeast Colorado Springs home was attacking his former wife when he was shot by the woman's 19-year-old son to protect her, a family member who declined to identify himself said afterward.
No arrests have been announced and police said they are investigating whether the shooting was in self-defense.
The dead man, whose name has not been released, was staying over when he started fighting with his ex-wife about 3 a.m., according to Colorado Springs police. When the fight turned physical, the woman's 19-year-old son stepped in and fired a single shot at his former stepfather, police said.
The man later died at the hospital.
The male relative said he also had intervened in past fights between the formerly married couple.
The couple "fought a lot" over the past several years before divorcing about a year ago, the family member said. Still, the ex-husband occasionally stayed at the 2341 Lexington Village Lane townhouse, he said.
The mother was being treated Thursday for bruising on her neck where her ex-husband reportedly tried to choke her, the family member said.
