A couple of troubling early season trends continued for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks against Swope Park Rangers on Wednesday at Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Park.
For the third consecutive game, the Switchbacks dropped a 1-0 result, and for the second straight game, the decisive goal was scored in the opening 10 minutes.
Wednesday in the home of the MLS side Sporting Kansas City, it was Tyler Blackwood’s goal in the seventh minute that saw the Switchbacks stay at three points through four games.
Moise Pouaty, who made his first appearance in goal replacing Steward Ceus, saw Blackwood blast a shot from just outside the six-yard box for the game's only goal.
Pouaty was busy at times, making a couple of key saves and seeing another Swope Park chance bounce back off the post. The Rangers owned a 15-5 advantage in shots and put seven of those shots on goal, while the Switchbacks settled for two, one of which was a Josh Suggs attempt from close range that was saved out for a corner.
The Switchbacks produced a couple of counterattacks in the second half but couldn’t come up with the final piece.
Rio Grande Valley visits Weidner Field for a 6 p.m. kick Saturday when the Switchbacks will look to reverse the current trend.
