Colorado Springs Sky Sox rally for eighth walk-off victory at home with 7-6 win over Reno

It proved worth the wait through pouring rain for the Sky Sox faithful huddled under the concourse roof Sunday afternoon.

The PCL's best-hitting team (.292) showed off its knack for the clutch hit again with its eighth walk-off victory at home this season, downing Reno 7-6.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Sky Sox batter Tim Wheeler ripped a single off the glove of first baseman Mike Jacobs to send the ball into shallow right field.

That allowed Charlie Blackmon, who scored twice and drove in two runs, to jog home to the cheers of some of the 3,758 who stuck through the intermittent rains at Security Service Field.

"That's when this is a lot of fun," Wheeler said. "We seem to thrive in that situation. It makes coming to the ballpark a lot of fun."

Blackmon reached on a leadoff walk, Xavier Nady singled and Ben Paulsen drew a eight-pitch walk to load the bases. Wheeler was swarmed at first base by his teammates.

"Charlie and Ben both had great at-bats and I just got the hit," he said. "At times this feels like a job, but not after this."

Reno (35-56) scored two runs in the fifth and tied the score at 6-6 on a two-run double by Alfredo Marte in the eighth to set the stage for Wheeler.

The Sky Sox took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Blackmon, an RBI triple by Wheeler and a sacrifice fly to right that scored Wheeler by Xavier Nady. Reno would score two runs in the second to cut the lead to 3-2.

Colorado Springs (48-41) added three runs over the next three innings, including a Charlie Culberson solo home run, his 13th homer this season, to make it 6-2 in the fourth.
