A brief standoff between police and a machete-wielding man ended Wednesday night when an officer stunned the 38-year-old with a 40-milimeter diameter, foam-tipped bullet.

"He showed some pretty damaging intent," said Colorado Springs police spokesman Lt. Catherine Buckley. "The officers approached this trying to make sure he wasn't injured. They wanted the best outcome for everybody."

Police from the Sand Creek and Gold Hill divisions went to the 600 block of Tia Juana Street shortly before 9 p.m. to investigate a domestic disturbance. They found a white Toyota Camry that was on fire and Damon Turner was in the car.

Officers surrounded the vehicle and ordered Turner to get out. He got out of the car with the machete in his hand, police said.

Police said the "less-lethal" round was fired at Turner and he was taken into custody "without incident." Officers later learned that Turner had allegedly entered a home in the area and threatened people with the large knife prior to the standoff.

Turner was arrested and taken to the El Paso County jail on suspicion of arson, felony menacing and harassment. He was being held Thursday morning without bond.
