A Colorado Springs police officer shot and killed pit bull Friday during a domestic disturbance investigation, police said.

Officers said they were approaching a home at the 2200 block of W. Vermijo Ave. when two pitbulls ran from the back of the house toward the officers. One of the dogs was shot as it lunged at an officer who was standing in the street in front of the house. The second dog was captured by the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Michael Howard, 43 was taken into custody on suspicion of assault, and Johni Williams, 29 was cited for having a vicious animal, Colorado Springs police said.
