Colorado Springs police are searching for a man they say stole a pickup and got away after a chase through several neighborhoods Friday.

A man called police around 2:40 a.m., claiming that he was following a male driver who had fired a gun at him during a disturbance. The caller said he had been chasing the shooter northbound on Austin Bluffs Boulevard through several neighborhoods.

Police spotted the shooter's pickup fleeing northbound through Briargate Parkway and into the Memorial Hospital North parking lot. According to police, truck drove off the road and over an embankment, into a muddy field.

Officers tried to find the shooter but he was able to escape, still driving the pickup. Police described the getaway vehicle as a white 1991 Dodge pickup with gray primer on the driver's door and a black toolbox in the back, which was reported stolen.

According to the caller, the shooter had tried to steal his car at the Retreat at Austin Bluffs apartment complex before the pursuit began and police did not find any bullet holes or casings from the shooting.

Police found the stolen Dodge pickup in the 9100 block of Lookout Mountain Court, south of Briargate Parkway, Friday afternoon.
