Colorado Springs police are searching for a 33-year-old registered sex offender in connection with a February sex assault on a 71-year-old woman.
After the woman reviewed a police photo lineup and a life-long friend of the alleged suspect identified Jacob Lashun Lewis from surveillance footage, police tapped Lewisas the person who allegedly attacked the woman in her home on Feb. 7
Police had released video footage from a the Walmart store near Platte Avenue and Chelton Road in May. The video showed Lewis and his friend Larry P. Maes in the store shortly after the attack, which the woman said occurred between 11 and 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 7.
According to an arrest affidavit, Maes saw himself on the news and called police within an hour to identify Lewis. Police detectives interviewed Maes who said he was in the car with Lewis when he turned down East Boulder Street and parked in front of a house.
The affidavit said the 71-year-old woman lives on Boulder Street and was in her bedroom watching television when she saw a man looking through her window. The man pointed toward the door, the document said, and eventually burst into the home.
Before the invasion, the woman got her handgun, which her son described as a Smith and Wesson, snub-nosed, .357 revolver. She didn't get the chance to use the gun, however, as the man attacked her, knocking the gun from her hand and allegedly sexually assaulting her.
The man ceased the attack and searched for the gun, the document said. He allegedly pushed furniture around, found the weapon and demanded the woman's wallet and $100 in cash before running from the home.
According to Maes, when his friend returned to the vehicle he was out of breath and acted nervous as he drove off.
Lewis had been at the home before, the affidavit said. The woman told police that a friend of hers came to the house to help the woman with some yard work. She brought a man the woman remembered as "Jacob" to help out.
Lewis also pled guilty to third-degree sexual assault on a child in early 2000. Police said Lewis is a registered sex offender.
